When I applied to retrain as a garden designer almost twenty years ago I thought I would be good at it because of my life-long passion for plants and horticulture. I soon realised, whilst studying at RHS Harlow Carr, that it was my original degree in Art & Design (textiles), that I would be calling on most. Spatial awareness and understanding of pattern are invaluable in designing outside space.
A few years on, running my own garden design business, I realised that garden design is not only about those things; it is actually about people. Garden design is a multi-faceted profession, but it's largely about understanding the needs of individuals and helping them transform the spaces in which they live; changing their lives for the better. It's about making people happy. (And that's why it makes me happy too.)
