In this new-build Townhouse, a terrace was built by the developers to hide buttresses for the high stone wall at the bottom of the garden. We took down the developers' mean little steps and built these new, wider steps as an integral part of the design, at the same time making the terrace deeper so that it was large enough for table & chairs.

This is a sunny wall and the Humulus lupulus 'Aureus' will soon climb over the pergola to create a cooler sitting area in the shade.

The sculpture, and later the silver birch behind, act as the focal point for the whole design. Views outside the garden are poor so the eye is kept in the site by creating a focal point at the bottom corner of the retaining wall.

This a low-maintenance garden, with blocks of Buxus sempervirens 'Suffructicosa' replacing the traditional lawn.

The paving detail in this garden is immaculate; Indian stone setts, the original developer's flags re-cycled, cut to the wedge shape of the design and resin bonded gravel.

As the living accommodation is on the first floor of this three storey house, the garden was designed to be viewed from above. Designing the garden was particularly tricky as the house is part of a curved terrace and there are no right angles in the entire space.
